Ceramic Metamorphosis

Ceramic Metamorphosis is an ongoing research project exploring how ceramic forms can change through material, time, process, and connection.

Rather than treating ceramic as a fixed form, I am interested in how a form can shift through making, breaking, joining, and reconfiguring. Changes, gaps, and traces are not necessarily resolved or restored, but can become part of a new form and relationship.

Current Stage: Weaving

At its current stage, I use weaving as a method to explore how ceramic forms can be transformed through connection and tension. Rigid ceramic elements are brought together with flexible thread, allowing their positions and relationships to shift as the work develops.

Through this process, the form is not fully determined from the beginning. Repeated acts of weaving and joining gradually shape the work, creating possibilities that emerge through the interaction of material, tension, and time.

Sans titre I brings together approximately 90 elongated ceramic elements with cotton and linen thread.

Through repeated weaving and joining, tension shifts the position and relationship of each element, allowing the form to gradually develop through the process of making.

In Sans titre II, a ceramic form that has lost part of its original shape is connected and reconfigured with steel wire. The wire does not replace what is missing; instead, the edges and traces of the original form remain visible as part of a new configuration.

Ongoing Research

My research is moving toward ceramic modules that can be connected and woven through thread, allowing tension and connection to continually alter the structure.

I am interested in what happens when the boundaries between what weaves and what is woven become less fixed, and when ceramic itself begins to function as part of a woven structure.

Part of Ceramic Metamorphosis, this work explores memory as something that can shift and take new forms over time, extending the weaving approach developed in Sans titre I.
